Church of St. Augustine (first) holds its first service.

1892

Architect: Sturgis & Cabot. The church is located at 71 Phillips Street. The congregation was established as a mission church for “the benefit of the colored people of Boston” by the Society of St. John the Evangelist, and met initially in a warehouse on Anderson Street in 1886. Charles Field serves as minister from 1892 to 1911. The largely African-American congregation merges with that of the Church of St. Martin in 1908.*
